• Centro is the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive and Authority, investing in rail, bus and Metro services for a population of 2.6 million people.
  • It is the largest public transport body outside London, with the busiest bus network by far, the highest daily traffic flows and more than 70 million commuter trips per year.
  • Centro is funded mostly by a levy from the seven city and metropolitan borough councils of the West Midlands and policy is set by 27 councillors
  • In Birmingham’s morning rush hour passengers on buses, trains and trams now outnumber commuters in their cars.
  • Although Centro does not operate any services directly we provide bus stops, bus stations and information services to work towards a more coordinated public transport network. We work closely with all partners including local authorities, bus companies and GoVia which holds the West Midlands rail franchise.
  • Buses provide 92% of public transport journeys in the West Midlands - accounting for almost one million journeys a day.
  • We operate 12 bus stations, manage 5,000 passenger shelters and 14,000 bus stops.
  • Centro subsidises 7% of bus services (approximately 200) operating in the West Midlands - paying operators to run on routes which are not considered commercially viable but are socially necessary.
  • We also run the concessionary fare scheme for over 60s, eligible blind and disable people and young people and promotes integrated multi-operator ticketing across all modes of public transport.
  • There are more than 6,000 free Park & Ride spaces at West Midland rail stations, all of which have Safer Parking accreditation.
  • These Park & Ride spaces take an estimated 2.75 million journeys off the region's roads every year, preventing 6,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and saving 94 tankers of fuel a year.
  • Centro has recently launched a new website designed to teach children about using sustainable transport - www.letzgogreen.org
  • Centro works with more than 500 employers in the West Midlands (over 300,000 employees) to provide Company TravelWise schemes.
