Plans to transform New Street station into a world class gateway for Birmingham and the region were unveiled on 16 February 2006. The “Birmingham Gateway” scheme will see £598 million of public and private investment in the complete redesign and redevelopment of the station and surrounding area. £400m of Government funding was confirmed on 12 February 2008
The Midland Metro extension from Birmingham Snow Hill to Five Ways will interchange with Birmingham New Street on Stephenson Street.
