Local angles to this story

One of the key LTP schemes for Birmingham is the redevelopment of New Street Station. The scheme will increase the station’s passenger capacity and provide a better gateway to Birmingham and the region. Funding is being sought from the rail industry and private sector, in addition to the LTP contribution.

Key LTP schemes in Coventry include:

·         Coventry Rapid Transit – a high quality, high frequency, limited stop bus service that operates like a tram that would run north – south through the City connecting to Warwick University in the south, to the Ricoh arena in the north and on to Nuneaton.

·         Further development of the PrimeLines bus initiatives

·         Coventry Station – proposals to redevelop the station and the area around the station to improve access to the city centre and improve the interchange between bus and rail.

In Dudley the Keeping Brierley Hill Moving project seeks to ease traffic congestion and deliver environmental improvements in the town centre. The construction of new routes, parallel to the High Street and from the A4036 Pedmore Road, will reduce traffic in the town and Level Street.

Key Sandwell schemes proposed in the LTP include:

·         The A41/A4031 All Saints’ Way junction improvement – a planned £20m underpass to support plans to regenerate West Bromwich and improve access to the motorway network.

·         The A4123/A461 junction improvement at Burnt Tree – a £10m joint scheme with Dudley for traffic signals to replace a notorious bottleneck on two key Black Country access routes that are key for freight access to employment sites.

Key LTP schemes in Solihull include the improvement to bus services through a Quality Bus Network in North Solihull. QBNs provide improvements such as new vehicles, bus priority and better passenger information. Solihull will also be rolling out further Red Routes and recently won a prestigious national transport award for the A34 Stratford Road scheme in Shirley.

Key LTP schemes for Walsall include:

·         The Town Centre Transport Project – an £11.5m improvement package to cut ring road congestion and boost regeneration around Walsall town centre. It will widen the road and improve junctions to help all transport users, including pedestrians and cyclists. It aims to reduce ‘rat runs’ on inappropriate routes and cut accidents on the highway network, as well as improve the environment for local communities along the route.

·         Bus Showcase routes within the borough to improve access for passengers with better shelters and special kerbs. These include the Arriva 33 route between Brownhills, Cannock and Hednesford, as well as Route 51 from Birmingham to Walsall, along the A34 Birmingham Road.

Key LTP schemes for Wolverhampton include a new railway station in the city centre and the provision of high quality access to one of the region’s major investment sites, i54, that will provide between 6,000 and 7,000 jobs. Both of these schemes are vital to the City’s regeneration strategy and will not only enhance the quality of choice of transport in the City, but will create high quality gateways into Wolverhampton.
