Black Country Consortium chief executive Sarah Middleton comments:
“Quality transport corridors are an essential element of the way forward for the Black Country and the Metro extension is a critical project identified in the Black Country Study to promote the development of Brierley Hill / Merry Hill as a sub-regional centre.”
Adrian Bailey MP for West Bromwich West which covers both Wednesbury and Great Bridge welcomed the announcement.
He said, “This is great news. The extension will provide an environmentally friendly boost to the Transport network to The Black County. It will help both shoppers and other travellers by diverting some shopping traffic off the roads. The links with buses will also enable those without cars to travel farther more quickly for recreation purposes. The project is a demonstration for the potential of the private sector working with both national and local government. I look forward to working with Centro and local communities to assist a smooth development of this project”.
Further comment from Westfield Development Director Peter Miller:
“We are both delighted and proud to be playing a part in this tangible demonstration of Westfield’s commitment to this region.”.
“The Midland Metro extension will play an integral role in facilitating the economic growth and regeneration of the Black Country. The fact that Metro delivers an unparalleled 99 per cent reliability means that we are confident the returns on our investment will certainly be considerable – and will bring real benefit to everyone living, working or travelling within the Black Country.”
He added: “More and more major European cities, such as Paris, Lyon, Dublin and Strasbourg are turning to modern trams to cut congestion and improve the environment – and the fact that today we have secured the future of the Midland Metro will ensure this region has the firm foundation it deserves to secure its rightful position as a real and growing economic powerhouse.”
